Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I have been sick so after cooking all day in a daze, I sat down and couldn’t taste a darn thing. The turkey was moist and the family raved so it must have been good.
We have a lot to be thankful for this year. Most recently, I am thankful for screw ups. You see, dad choked on a huge piece of ham this weekend. The care home he is at is supposed to be cutting up his food. The caregiver gave him some water- something you never give a choking person because it cuts off the airflow if they had some. He managed to get the water out and was still breathing when they took him to hospital. But, when they took him to get x-rays he coded blue. My brother in law saw 15 doctors and nurses go running with a crash cart. He said to himself, man, that guy is in bad shape, then he realized it was my dad.
They brought him back with the paddles, got the ham out and he is fine. Here’s where the screw up comes in- he has a DNR. They aren’t supposed to be bringing him back at all. Luckily, the care home gave the paramedics the wrong medical info. If they hadn’t, we wouldn’t have had him at the table with us again this year.
I am also thankful for my funny little 4 year old boy. My mother in law asked him if he was going to say Grace. He asked, “What’s that?” She said, “It’s what you say before eating.” His response, “Oh I thought you say Bon Appetit”
He cracks me up! Happy Thanksgiving everyone and Bon Appetit!
I’ll admit it. I get a high off of saving money at the store. I like getting stuff for free or even getting paid to buy stuff. Yes, that’s right, with several deals I end up making money. Here was today’s Albertsons take:
36 yoplait yogurts, 12 popsecret boxes of popcorn, 6 cans of Progresso bread crumbs, 4 warm delight minis, 2 cans pillsbury cinnamon rolls, 3 packages of Green giant frozen veggie steamers, 3 tubes of Farmland sausages, one freshetta pizza (an impulse purchase- no coupons used) and cottage cheese.
Total out of pocket: $19.43 but I have a $5 off your next purchase coupon left over, so it comes out to $14.43. if I would have skipped the pizza and cottage cheese- which weren’t part of the deal it would have been $8.99. Total savings $116.54.
I also got a coupon for free french bread or a reusable grocery bag if I do a survey.
Wanna know how? Albertson’s has a sale where if you buy 10 of a list of products, you get a $5 off your next purchase. On top of that, for today only, if you buy 3 or more pop secret popcorns, you get a $3 off your next purchase coupon. I used manufacturers coupons to save even more. You can only do 10 in one transaction, so I did 3 transactions in one trip and went back and did another three. I used the $5 & $3 off your next purchase coupons for the next transaction.
Heck I also get enough stickers to get a free dish for the dinner ware promotion.
Think I am a genius? I’m not. I am a member of Couponsense.com and my wonderful instructor, Maria Michael sends me detail emails spelling out exactly how to get each deal. I highly recommend signing up! If you do, select Maria as your instructor and she will email you all the deals. Tell her Rissa sent you.
Since joining last year, I have had to buy extra shelves because my pantry was overflowing with the free or almost free deals. I have donated so much to charity. I will never pay for toothpaste or toothbrushes again!
I love it, I love saving money. Heck, I might even roll that savings into a new Coach purse. But don’t tell my husband!
I love Arby’s. Their Beef and cheddar melts are yummy. I have lost my appetite after reading this article. An Arby’s in Chattanooga refused to give food to a disadvantaged man and his very pregnant wife. The man asked the manager- not for a handout but just for some food which he was willing to work for in any capacity. He even offered to pick up garbage and cigarette butts in the parking lot.
The manager’s response, nope. They refused to feed a hungry man and his pregnant wife. They weren’t begging, he wanted to earn his food. Nice show of compassion Arby’s!
America’s roast beef, I don’t think so. The statue of liberty says “give me your tired, your poor…” Guess we should change that to Cash, credit or Debit only. Sad. Here is the article. Check it out…
I went out to eat yesterday. We had 4 adults and 2 kids. The bill included an automatic 18% gratuity. What the heck? Why did American restaurants decide that bigger parties should automatically have tips added to the check. If they force the amount on you it is no longer a tip but a surcharge!
Tips should be optional. The better your service the better your tips. I understand that tips are included in waiters/waitresses pay so they only get paid a few bucks an hour. Unless service is really really bad I always tip.
The funny thing is I normally tip 20% or more. By putting the tip automatically on the bill they pissed me off and got less.
Another thing that ticks me off is when take out or fast food places have tip jars out. I refuse to tip for fast food. I know there are some people who tip the Sonic employees who bring your food to the car but I say forget it! It is fast food. I would be perfectly happy to go through a drive through or walk inside. If their restaurant concept includes kids on roller skates bringing food to your car like a 50’s drive up diner- that’s their choice.
As far as take out places- the whole point of not eating in the restaurant is to not tip and save that money. If I was going to tip I might as well eat there and get the actual service I am tipping you for!
Speaking of tips and food, I saw this article on MSN. 14 tons of Oreo cookies spilled on the highway when the driver fell asleep and the truck tipped over. man, sign me up for that cleanup! Much better than cleaning up oil spills from little birds and such. Forget the diet- I am doing it for the environment!
I had hoped to be able to have Dim Sum like I mentioned in my AC article, Best Dim Sum for Mother’s Day, but alas it wasn’t in the cards. Instead we took my father, who is in the process of moving out of his non assisted living facility to his new assisted group home, to go eat at his old place with some of his friends. This was his first time back since his hypoglycemic coma and near death a few weeks ago.
The food wasn’t the best but it made dad happy so it was worth it. Next week I plan on having some Dim Sum though! Here are some pictures that didn’t make the article. The place is really beautiful.
